Photo Outings
by gabherman
Been meaning to recap my photo outing a few weeks ago when the photo scene started up in full swing again post holidays. It was great being out and seeing everyone about. I hit up two events- a group show gallery opening and a silent photo auction, each with their own unique vibe and crowd.
First up was curator Ruben Natal San Miguel’s opening, Versus, at Hous Projects. What a scene! The space itself was gorgeous, mixing the beautiful prints from the show with what I believe was John Houshmand’s stunning carved wooden sculptural pieces. There were plenty of people, though never felt too crowded and there was hardly a wait for the bar, which as Cara Philips pointed out had three different options of red wine to choose from! The crowd was also lovely and filled with talented hot shots and up and comers in the fine art photo scene. I always feel a bit like a groupie at an event like this. From all the photographer’s blogs I follow, I’ve come to feel like I know them so well. I was delighted to have a great conversation with Elizabeth Flemming, as I was with Amy Stein. Speaking of Cara Philips it was awesome to finally see her UV portraits blown up. (I had assisted her while shooting the project last year).

Other highlights included Michael Wolfs photographs, which are always phenomenal to see in person up close.

And I really dug the dual between Jen Davis and Eric Ogden.

Next up was Resource Magazine’s One Case Silent Photo Auction held at the Milk Gallery. I’m always a little turned off by the heavy fashion scene at Milk parties and openings. There were some very tasteful photos up for auction, as well as some that I just didn’t care for, but it was all for a great cause.

If I had the funds, I totally woulda swept up this image by Vincent Laforet. Blown up at 40×60, this woulda been real nice to have in my living room. Someday. Can you believe that this is a photo of Coney Island?

Comments
I was given one of Vincent’s photographs from his Coney Island series a few years back, and I never get tired of looking at it. Besides it has always been a conversation piece when people ask what/where/how! It’s certainly not a 40×60, but even at 11×14 it’s a prize.
